How Many Users are Actually Reading Your Privacy Policy

Author: Clarip Director of Sales

“Do you have any idea how many of your users actually read the terms of service, the privacy policy, the statement of rights and responsibilities?  I mean, ACTUALLY read it?”

Such was the query offered by Senator Ron Johnson, Republican of Wisconsin to Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and Founder, of Facebook during two exhaustive days of questioning on Capitol Hill earlier this month.  It was meant to highlight a reality that Clarip has known for quite some time – people simply do not read the necessary privacy and disclosure notices that are included in nearly every product today.  And, why would you, as the average privacy notice is in excess of 3,500 words?!  As evidence, I offer the same Mark Zuckerberg, in a moment of clarity, giving the following response to Senator Johnson’s question — “Senator, I would imagine that most people probably don’t read the whole thing.”

What made this exchange all the more remarkable was more news last week about Facebook, itself.  Facing the public backlash from its agreement with Cambridge Analytica, which ultimately led to the exposure of nearly 100 million peoples’ information, Facebook and Zuckerberg agreed to testify before Congress in the hopes of “stemming the tide” of negative publicity.  Yet, according to CNBC, Facebook was guilty of the very same omission as the rest of us – IT NEVER READ THE TERMS OF SERVICE with Cambridge Analytica.

That is why, if are a CPO, General Counsel, or anyone concerned that what happened to Facebook could happen to your company, then you should visit us at www.clarip.com.  Clarip offers a white-label UX wrapper for your existing privacy and disclosure notices.  Our Privacy Notice for Humans(TM) reduces your complex and lengthy privacy and disclosure notices down to simple and understandable bullet points — e.g. what data is collected, whom it is shared with, etc – while still maintaining the full legal disclosure as well.

Clarip’s UX wrapper “kills two birds with one stone.”  For customers, it allows them the ability to see how and with whom data is collected and for the company, it presents the opportunity to drive brand loyalty and ultimately, increase revenue.  An old adage holds that “simplicity is the soul of brilliance” and as such, I guess you could say that Clarip’s privacy wrapper is both – simple and brilliant!
