Google Updates Privacy Policy to Increase Transparency
Author: Clarip Director of Sales
The media spotlight may have been squarely focused upon Facebook last month in light of CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s testimony to Congress about its data scandal, but what can be lost in the glare of the klieg lights of the news cycle is how other technology companies are updating their privacy practices as well. Take, for example, the announcement by Google of its updated privacy and disclosure practices last week.
According to CNET, “the actual content of the policy hasn’t changed, but Google has updated the language and navigation of the document, and introduced videos and illustrations in order to make it clearer than ever before exactly how it collects and stores user data, as well as how to access it and delete it.”
The unfortunate truth is that privacy and disclosure notices in the past have typically been written by lawyers AND FOR LAWYERS. The average privacy notice contains over 3,000 words and this complexity makes it unlikely – if not near improbable – that the consumer will read and/or understand the obligations therein. With the approach of GDPR and its transparency principle, as well as the Zuckerberg testimony before Congress, companies have begun to sit up and take notice of the importance of ensuring that consumers understand their privacy disclosures. Google is just the latest example, albeit a high profile one, of a company taking steps to make the data privacy of its users more transparent.
For those that don’t have Google’s resources and are looking for a more affordable way to make their privacy policy transparent than asking their lawyer to rewrite it, check out our Privacy Notice for Humans. Clarip offers a white-label UX privacy wrapper that will take your complex privacy and disclosure notices and reduce them to simple and understandable bullet points – what data is shared, with whom, what the consumer can expect, etc. By being white-label, Clarip is literally, and figuratively, the plumbing behind the scenes, providing the consumer with clear, concise, and understandable language. Yet, the full privacy and disclosure notice are still available with a simple click so that you can maintain your appropriate legal disclosure to provide the consumer everything that is legally required!
Clarip also offers other software to help organizations facilitate GDPR compliance, including consent management software, DSAR portal as part of the Clarip Privacy Center for Humans, and GDPR data mapping.
