Philly Tech Week 2018 Thanks from Clarip!
Clarip would like to extend a big thank you to Technical.ly, Comcast, Philly Startup Leaders and everyone else in the Philadelphia community that made Philly Tech Week 2018 special for us last week! We made it out to several events this year and hosted our own event on GDPR and data privacy to a grateful group of attendees bright and early on Friday morning.
PTW Kickoff Party
The opening event was held at Schmidt’s Commons, still commonly referred to here in Philadelphia as the Piazza. There were a lot of jokes about how it was going to rain again on the Philly Tech Week Kickoff, as has been pretty common the past few years during this springtime event. However, the rain held off and it ended up being a very pleasant evening outside in Northern Liberties.
Entrepreneur Expo
The 10th annual event hosted by Philly Startup Leaders is the local tech community’s largest showcase of innovation by technology companies and startups. Nearly 100 local tech companies hosted booths at the Franklin Institute, named for one of Philadelphia’s first innovators, Benjamin Franklin. Clarip was named one of the four companies that caught the eye of Philly Tech Week host Technical.ly Philly at the event.
PTW18 Signature Event
Reading Terminal Market opened for the closing event of Philly Tech Week, a mix of a cocktail reception and a local technology expo. Local vendors from Reading Terminal served tastings of their food. It was great to see lots of old friends from the Philadelphia startup and tech community there.
Clarip Data Privacy Roundtable
With the GDPR deadline less than thirty days away from Philly Tech Week, we decided to do a roundtable discussion of some of the top areas of concern with the law for the Philadelphia business and tech community. This included the topics of transparency, consent management, and data subject access rights, among others. We also discussed the impact of the Facebook – Cambridge Analytica news on data privacy efforts here in the United States, and the state of the current bills in Congress. Our event was well covered in the local media, making it in both the Philadelphia Inquirer’s online roundup of events as well as one of the Philly Voice’s top free events to attend. And it seemed to prove popular with attendees – one guest told us that he had attended quite a few GDPR talks so far and ours was by far the best. Because of the success of the event, I expect we will be doing more in-person events for the business community struggling with GDPR compliance in Philadelphia.
The Event We Missed: Introduced
We heard great things about Introduced, the first annual one day conference with programming, demos, networking and more at the Science History Institute (formerly the Chemical Heritage Foundation). There were simply too many things going on in the run up to the GDPR compliance deadline of May 25th for us to take a work day off to attend. But hopefully we will be able to make it next year.
Once again, thanks to everyone that attended our event and helped make Philly Tech Week great. We’ll see you again next year!
