UVA Health Notified Patients of Breach Impacting Nearly 1900
A hacker infiltrated the University of Virginia Health System via malware on physician’s devices that allowed unauthorized access to whatever the device was viewing. The UVA health system is notifying 1,882 patients about the breach via letters in the mail.
The malware potentially allowed access to patient information from between May 2015 and December 2016. It was found on physician’s devices and offered the ability to view patient information such as the patients’ name, treatments, addresses and date of birth if it was being viewed on the device.
The FBI has made an arrest and the suspect indicated that he did not share the information with others. The UVA Medical Center said that it was not the only party to be affected by the malware.
