Greater need for privacy protections increases the need for privacy professionals

Greater need for Privacy Protections increases the need for Privacy Professionals

Data privacy has surged in recent history.  Companies are collecting more data, legislators are drafting more laws, and people are demanding greater respect for their privacy.  Amidst this backdrop, privacy professionals are becoming more in-demand and in some cases receiving better pay.

According to research by the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC), the median base salary for various privacy positions in companies has increased since 2014.  Privacy Managers, Directors of Privacy, and Chief Privacy Officers have all seen pay increases, both in terms of median base salary and in total compensation.  Chief Privacy Officers have seen the greatest increase with their median base salary increasing from $190,000 in 2014 to $285,000 in 2021.  That is a 50 percent increase, in just 7 years.

The demand for privacy professionals has driven up their compensation.  But what does the future hold?

Nineteen percent of chief legal officers say they expect to increase hiring of privacy professionals in 2022.  Only 14 percent made the same prediction in 2021.

The reason for this prediction?  60 percent of polled Chief Legal Officers indicated that they expect an increase in privacy-related regulatory enforcement in their industry in the coming year.

The top three issues that Chief Legal Officers identified as being most important to their business were cybersecurity, regulation and compliance, and data privacy.  Not only have these issues been identified as the three most important for three years in a row, but there is likely vote splitting between regulation and compliance and data privacy.

Recent changes in the data privacy law landscape globally and nationally are a big motivator for the evolving perception of the importance of privacy.  The General Data Protection Regulation, the California Consumer Privacy Act, and the Personal Information Protection Law have already driven some change.  More change is coming with the California Privacy Rights Act, the Virginia Consumer Data Protection, and the Colorado Privacy Act.  Furthermore, regulators in the European Union, in particular, as well as California, and China are beginning to take the kiddy gloves off when it comes to enforcement.
