Personal Data of Users of Two More Social Platforms Leaked Online

Two Major Social Platforms Leaked Online

Last week, we reported that personal data of 533 million Facebook users was posted for free in a hacking forum. The information includes data on users from 106 countries, including over 32 million records on U.S. users, 11 million U.K. users, and 6 million users in India. Posted information includes phone numbers, Facebook IDs, full names, locations, birthdates, bios, and, in some cases, email addresses.

Just day later, of April 6, 2021, it was reported that an archive containing data purportedly scraped from 500 million LinkedIn profiles was up for sale on the dark web.  Two million records were further leaked as a “proof-of-concept” sample by the seller.  Scrapped data includes LinkedIn IDs, full names, email addresses, phone numbers, gender, professional titles and work-related data, and links to LinkedIn and other social media profiles.

Then, on April 11, it was reported that personal data of 1.3 million Clubhouse users was posted online on a popular hacker forum. The scraped data of Clubhouse users includes names, social media profile names, and other details. Clubhouse reportedly responded that it had not been breached or hacked and that “the data referred to is all public profile information from [its] app, which anyone can access via the app or [its] API.”

Consumers who might have been affected by these data leaks might take several steps to minimize potential exposure and harm from the incidents:

  • Use data leak checkers to find out if their personal data has been leaked.
  • Beware of suspicious messages from Facebook, LinkedIn, and Clubhouse.
  • Beware of requests for connections from strangers.
  • Change the password of affected social media and email accounts.
  • Utilize a password manager to create strong passwords and store them securely.
  • Enable multi-factor authentication on the online accounts.
